If I was to recommend one New Years’ resolution for your business to undertake it would be “to better protect your assets and livelihood from hackers and ransomware”.
The reported Cyber Security statistics for the UK are frightening:
- One small business in the UK is successfully hacked every 19 seconds
- Around 65,000 attempts to hack small- to medium-sized businesses (SMBs) occur in the UK every day, around 4,500 of which are successful
- Thirty-seven percent of UK companies have reported a data breach incident to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) in the past 12 months
According to the UK Government, 80% of cyber-attacks could be prevented if organisations put simple cyber security controls in place.
So, what can an SMB like yourselves do? Well, implementing MFA is one way and increasing your email security for Office 365 is another. Another broad improvement that will “raise the bar of your security posture” is to attain the Cyber Essentials accreditation.
What is Cyber Essentials?
The Cyber Essentials scheme is a cyber security standard designed by the UK government, which organisations can be assessed and be certified against. It identifies the security controls that an organisation must have in place within their IT systems to have confidence that they are addressing cyber security effectively and mitigating the risk from Internet-based threats.
The scheme focuses on the following five essential mitigation strategies:
- Malware Protection
- Boundary Firewalls and Internet Gateways
- Secure Configuration
- Access Control
- Patch Management
Cyber Essentials protects against 80% of threats and is designed for organisations of all sizes, and in all sectors. It enables an organisation to showcase its credentials as a trustworthy and secure organisation when it comes to cyber security and will help prevent your organisation being a soft target when it comes to automated hacking tools and opportunists.
How can CSSCloud help you?
We help clients achieve Cyber Essentials certification by managing the assessment and certification on their behalf. We are best placed to help our clients as we know how their computer systems are configured and can provide the assessors with the information they require, making the assessment process more efficient.
Our computer systems were initially assessed in 2016 and have been successfully re-assessed since, demonstrating that we do ourselves, what we advise our clients to do.
Cyber Security is something that every business needs to be aware of
